Medapti: A Simple Solution for Administering Oral Medication to Babies

Improving the Process of Giving Medicine to Infants

When it comes to giving oral medication to babies, parents often face numerous challenges. Dorota Dyk, the designer behind Medapti, experienced these difficulties firsthand with her own children. Inspired by the need for a safer and more effective solution, Dyk created Medapti, an innovative oral medicine syringe adapter that simplifies the process of administering medication to infants.

Administering medication to babies can be a daunting task, especially when they refuse to take it or struggle with swallowing. Concerns about choking and ensuring the correct dosage further complicate the process. Medapti addresses these issues with its unique design, which directs the syringe to the side of the mouth, preventing the medication from reaching the back of the throat. The adapter features a mouthguard that helps position the syringe and ensures it does not go too far into the mouth, while its soft material is gentle on the gums.

What sets Medapti apart from existing products is its focus on safety. The design not only passes a choking test but also undergoes a rigorous air-obstruction safety test. By surpassing current standards, Medapti provides parents with peace of mind when administering medication to their babies.

The journey to create Medapti involved extensive research and development. Dyk started with clay and cardboard prototypes, which underwent approximately 50 design modifications. Multiple rounds of 3D printing and vacuum casting were conducted to refine the product and create functional prototypes. The final design adheres to safety standards and is made from medical-grade, BPA-free thermoplastic elastomer, ensuring it is safe for use with infants.

Medapti weighs only 6 grams and has dimensions of 62mm x 50mm x 43mm. It consists of a mouthguard and a tube where the syringe is inserted. The tube securely holds the syringe in place without the need for excessive force. Ventilation holes and a holder to pull Medapti out in case it gets stuck in the mouth are additional safety features. The product is packaged in a fully recyclable cardboard box, aligning with Medapti's commitment to sustainability.

Medapti's innovative design simplifies the process of administering oral medication to babies. By providing a secure and controlled method, it ensures the medication reaches the intended location without causing discomfort or potential harm. The adapter will be available in the UK and on Amazon marketplace starting in April 2021, with plans for expansion into other European countries later in the year.

Medapti's groundbreaking design has garnered significant attention and recognition. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Baby, Kids, and Children's Products Design category in 2021. This prestigious accolade celebrates designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life. Medapti's innovative approach to simplifying the administration of oral medication to babies truly makes it a standout product in the market.
